DAILY BEACH DIVER REPORT: 1-28-23

Strong winds with gusts to 25-30mph maintain 3-5’ surf and perilous conditions for beach diving. Small craft warnings are even keeping boat inland. Expect this to blow out in 3 days and return us to some diveable water next week.

DAILY BEACH DIVER REPORT for 1-22-23

In blew the wind and the result is now pounding the beach from 3-4’ rollers. Expect the breeze to continue through Wednesday, abating off and on enough to maintain good visibility. Temperatures will not start rising much for now, even though we have more sunlight each day, because winter systems are still dominant. Thursday will be a good diving day and we will keep fingers crossed for the weekend.

DAILY BEACH DIVER REPORT: 01-05-23

One foot waves are barely large enough to break on the sandbars approaching shore, and most of the calm sea presents us clear, refreshing (77F) water to enjoy on a bonus winter dive day. Mild surge and sometimes strong current await at 25’ depth, but it is the current that maintains our good visibility today. Lobsters are fewer, and one must measure carefully to avoiding bagging shorts, but legal size limits are available to the diligent. Diving will be better today than any time this weekend, so enjoy if you can.

Last Daily Beach Diver Report of 2022

Mild east wind pushing surf toward the shore with little more than 1’ rise to each wave in 3-4 second sets. Less breeze tomorrow means calmer seas, better visibility, and a great chance to start the New Year right underwater. Water temp is 77-78F and visibility is greenish 10-15’ close in and 15-20’ on the first reef. A few lobster are worth the catch bag but measure twice because there are more shorts than legals in each hole. Expect good diving through Monday afternoon.

DAILY BEACH DIVER REPORT: POST-NICOLE DAMAGE ASSESSMENT

As you can see, Anglin Pier suffered pretty badly from a glancing blow of a Cat 1 storm, which brings into question the integrity of the entire structure. One would guess the pier will continue to be closed for a very long time, at the very least. That brownish-crud tinge in the water will take the better part of a week to clear under the best conditions, so best make other plans for this weekend.

DAILY BEACH DIVER REPORT: 10-9-22

You already know it isn’t worth dressing out until all the effects of Ian are cleared up, right? Presently, 1-2’ surf with the occasional 3’ roller doesn’t look too bad but the cruddy water beneath comes to us courtesy of the Gulf Stream carrying away the churned remnants of the hurricane. We should see some improvements as conditions smooth out this week. Fins are crossed in hopes of that. October is October and change is the name of the game this season.

Relative calm this morning belies the storms surrounding us. Occasional thunderstorms will pester beach goers and dirty water will make one wonder why he swam out for a dive. Better to wait for another day unless you just have to have one of the many tasty lobsters crawling around right now. Moderate surge and current. Water temp 84-85F.

Sadly, visibility continues to be an issue off the beach, although in just a few spots it is good enough for a barely-acceptable dive. If you want to dive today, do so early before wind and surf may increase later today. Presently only 1-2’ with swells growing. Moderate to strong surge. We really were not kidding when we said the ocean needed to rest before we dive it again. Some who tried yesterday report visibility as poor as 1-2’ (Blue Heron Bridge) and 2-4’ (Fort Lauderdale). Even those who took an expensive boat ride further out gained only a little with 4-6’ of viz on the 2nd and 3rd reefs. Those are conditions only the desperate must accept for a dive. Let’s give it a few more days. Forecasts project some more calm maybe by the weekend but possible rough conditions mid-week. Veteran beach divers and water watchers know that October can be a difficult month.

DAILY BEACH DIVER REPORT: 9-29-22

Ian’s glancing blow left our surf and water messy. If you jumped in now, you might see three feet in any direction near shore and just a bit beyond arm’s length on the first reef but you would be battling substantial surge and crazy near-shore currents. West wind on Friday may calm the surf but subsurface conditions will take a few days to clear up. If you dive this weekend, you will find lobsters moving back to the shallows but braille-like conditions close in. Veteran divers remember how the surge blows one back and forth across the reef while trying to dig a bug from a hole but new divers may find that entertaining. (Helpful hint: wear a wetsuit to avoid scratching coral burns on your legs all next week.)

Not easy to predict conditions when you have a Cat 4 hurricane so influential that it sends us rollers from the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Visibility is okay but not great, still it is good enough for a good dive and a chance to see those big, tasty lobsters everyone is talking about.

HISTORIC LIGHTHOUSE GOES DARK

Massive thunderstorms and violent lightning this past week claimed a historic victim when they took out the iconic lighthouse in Hillsboro Beach. For over 115 years, the Hillsboro Lighthouse has been a beacon for mariners off the coast of SE Florida but that light went out Thursday night when a direct lightning strike fried newly installed circuitry. Recently converted to LED from its old incandescent bulbs, the renewed light had been functioning well until nature decided to test it with an overload. Technicians have restored partial function to the light and a permanent repair will be possible once replacement parts arrive from the manufacturer in Australia.
