Famous Dania Erojacks Beach Dive

  • 6503 North Ocean Drive Dania Beach, FL, 33004 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

We'll meet at the park for an easy walk through the sand and a swim to the reef. The Park Reef never fails to please with its rich diversity of texture and marine life.

The Famous Erojacks are a bit of a walk down the beach but well worth the effort. Built as an erosion control experiment many years ago, the structure is now an artificial reef teaming with fish, lobster, coral, and sponges. This is a great site for photography and fish identification. No spearing is allowed because we are departing from the park where such hunting is prohibited.

Please be prepared to gear up and head for the water no less than 20-30 minutes after the posted meetup time. Entrance to the park is only $4 for single-occupant car/$6 for a car load but that pays for parking and use of all amenities.

Dive specifics include a 45-60 minute bottom time at depths from 16-26'. In good conditions, this dive is appropriate for divers needing to build their experience and a joy for those who are advanced. Be prepared to carry your gear 200 yards, if you want to dive the jacks or just 100 yards to the Park Reef entry point.

Post dive debriefing and decompression will be at Whiskey Creek Hideout within the park.

Underwater Pumpkin Carving Contest

  • Perry St and N. Surf Road Hollywood, FL USA (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Anyone can carve a pumpkin on the kitchen table. South Florida Beach Divers do it on the ocean floor surrounded by admiring fish. This is a fun event designed to bring out the creative streak in every diver. Every year, we see pumpkins that stagger the imagination.

Show up for the dive with a pumpkin ready for your design. You can clean out the guts first but pumpkins cannot have designs preprinted or precut. Everyone starts with a clean pumpkin. Buddy teams can share a pumpkin or each can enter separately. If you need a buddy, you are sure to find one among the participants. If you just want to photograph the crazy action beneath the waves, make sure your batteries are fresh so you won't miss anything.

Other equipment you will want to bring include a mesh bag to carry your pumpkin to and from the site and a 2 lb weight to keep your pumpkin from floating away as you carve. We will enter the surf off the beach and swim out to the rocks for pumpkin carving. Buddy teams can anchor themselves on the bottom, which is mostly sand for the first 100 yards out and in the areas around the rocks. Following the creative portion, buddies can explore the reef before returning for the judging and refreshments

Perry St has plenty of parking at $4/hr payable at MasterMeters. No restroom facilities are near but a freshwater shower will ensure a good rinse.

Famous Yellow Brick Road Beach Dive

You've heard about this incredible site, now you can visit it and enjoy its wonders just off the beach in Hollywood. Once a path through the reefs for an outfall pipe, this structure now serves as habitat for in incredible diversity of marine life, including reef fish, tropical species, shark, rays, lobster, and countless others. Larger fish traverse the area in their circuits north and south, so expect to see tarpon, amber jack, mackeral, and small tuna.

We'll meet in the patio area adjacent to the Broadwalk in Charnow Park.
Parking is available in the garage next to the park. After a short briefing, we'll wade into the surf and swim the few meters past the surf to the first reef line. The Yellow Brick Road starts about there but because it is a narrow entry, we'll have some veteran divers lead the way.

Bring a camera because you will doubtless see a lot to remember. Those who wish to lobster may also bring gear, but make sure you have a valid license and a lobster gauge.

Incredible Oakland Park Reef Dive

The reef off Oakland Park must be seen to be believed. First, there is a garden-like patch reef that stretches for acres just beyond the sandbar. A few hundred yards out, you find the west wall of the first reef system and the change could not be more dramatic. Scores of large brain corals populate the rise up toward plated shelves and ledges. Marine life teems among the mounds with colorful reef species flitting between and larger schools hovering above.

In addition to surveying the reef, noting coral health and particulars for reporting to Southeast Florida Environmental Action Network (SEAFAN) https://floridadep.gov/rcp/coral/content/seafan, we will also remove any trash, plastic, and debris we encounter.

This dive is suitable for open water divers with experience on long surface swims. Maximum depths are less than 25' and bottom time may be 60-75 minutes.

We'll meet at the parking lot, gear up, and walk over to the beach entrance. Master Meters take cash and credit but parking may be limited so plan on an early arrival to get a space.

After the dive, we have our choice of Broadwalk taverns, cafes, or Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville, to decompress and tell dive stories.

Let's shake off the angst from COVID, masks, Karens, and other crap by doing some beach diving. We'll choose somewhere great to visit, like one of the finest sites in South Florida - the Yellow Brick Road.

(Divers renting gear should meet the DiveMobile in the garage.) After a short briefing, we'll wade into the surf and swim the few meters past the surf to the first reef line. The Yellow Brick Road starts about there but because it is a narrow entry, we'll have some veteran divers lead the way.

Bring a camera because you will doubtless see a lot to remember. Those who wish to lobster may also bring gear, but make sure you have a valid license and a lobster gauge.

RENTAL GEAR IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR THIS DIVE.

Incredible Lauderdale by the Sea Beach Dive

Lauderdale by the Sea is quickly becoming famous for it outstanding reef just yards off the shore and a few steps away from parking. A few fin kicks beyond the sand bar lies a unique snorkel trail that features replica cannons, ballast piles, and a ship's anchor. Next, a complex and tiered hard bottom reef dazzles with brain coral, gorgonians, sponges, and ledges, swarming with every reef fish imaginable. Past the pier, the first reef system beckons divers to explore its crags, mounds, and tunnels. This dive MUST be in your log book.

We'll meet early enough to grab good parking either right on the beach, adjacent on-street parking, or the nearby public lot. Geared up, we'll meet at the beach portal, buddy up, and brief for the dive. Maximum depths are 16-20' and bottom times may be 45-60 minutes. Seatech Ledge Night Beach Dive

We will have a bit of a moon and calm seas to enjoy Tuesday evening. Visibility has been okay, so this promises to be a sweet and enjoyable dive, if conditions remain as forecast. If you have never done a night dive, this should be a great night to start. If you make arrangements, you can even count this dive toward your advanced diver rating.

We'll meet and gear up near the restroom building. Remember, this is THE NORTH END OF THE PARKING LOT. Divers MUST have a primary light and a backup light. We also recommend a tank marker or other personal illuminated marker (glowstick, etc.) Those needing a buddy may find one among the many other divers who will attend.

This dive ranges from 16 to 25 feet in depth. Anyone not night qualified may work with instructor Tom to ensure proper training. Freshwater showers are available. Parking meters take cash and cards at $2 per hour. Refreshments are available after diving at the grill or at the nearby Quarterdeck Restaurant - provided we enter and exit in a timely manner.

RENTAL GEAR is available with sufficient notice (not later than 2hrs before event time). We can bring to the site BCD, tank, regulator, and weights, if you let us know what size and how much. Air tanks, $10; BCD’s, $15, regulator set, $15; and weights (any amt), $5. To ensure your gear order, please submit payment via Venmo (tom-carpenter-8), PayPal (tcarpenterjr@gmail.com), and CashApp ($beachdiver).

Erojacks and Park Reef Beach Dive

Details

RENTAL GEAR IS AVAILABLE FOR THIS DIVE. Air tanks $10, BCD's $15, Regulator set $15, weights (any amount) $5. Please state your size when renting a BCD or Fins.

Copenhagen Wreck Beach Dive

Copenhagen Wreck Beach Dive

The S.S. Copenhagen sank on a stormy night in May 1900 on its way to Havana with a load of coal. After more than a century lying just off the Lauderdale by the Sea shore, the wreckage provides habitat for an incredible diversity of marine life, including a 5' goliath grouper that warily watches visiting divers.

We will gather in the parking lot of the Sea Watch Restaurant to brief, buddy up, gear up, and go. The trip out includes a long surface swim to the mooring buoys that mark the resting place for the old ship. You can submerge early to enjoy the reef west of the wreck but you might want to save your air for the main attraction and cruise the reef on the way back in.

The Sea Watch staff have invited us to join them for lunch after the dive.

This is an ambitious swim for most divers but the dive itself is well within the skill level of open water certified divers. When the conditions are right, this is a spectacular dive on a prime site that is a protected State landmark. (see brochure at http://www.museumsinthesea.com/_docs/Copenhagen_brochure.pdf

Erojacks Night Dive

Erojacks Night Dive

You know the Erojacks: a system of cement devices designed to interrupt sand erosion that now constitute an incredible habitat off shore. We'll explore them after dark for the incredible night life that includes octopus, eels, and other critters.

We'll enter this time from the Dania Beach Park side rather than the State Park, so plan on meeting at the north end of the parking lot. Once geared up, we'll meet under the pier and walk toward the jacks. Depending on current flow, we might enter near the bridge and drift north or walk to the jacks and drift south. Either way, we'll have a blast. Parking is available at $2 per hour; restrooms and freshwater showers are nearby.

RENTAL GEAR is available with sufficient notice (not later than 2hrs before event time). We can bring to the site BCD, tank, regulator, and weights, if you let us know what size and how much. Yankee Clipper Erojacks Beach Dive

Yankee Clipper Erojacks Beach Dive

The Yankee Clipper Erojacks are less well-known than the Dania Erojacks but only because they are a little further offshore and slightly more difficult to locate. Yet, once a diver sees these jacks are twice as high and twice as wide, with marine life twice as populous and larger than other jack structures, one sees the attraction. Our team has photographed hogfish as big as doormats here and videod nursesharks being chased by other sharks. Nearby lies the wreck of a barge that sank here during the hurricane of 1925, providing historical context to the site as well as diving significance.

Our dive plan includes a visit to the jacks and the wreck (conditions permitting), then a return to the beach. We'll survey both sites for lionfish, take pictures, catch lobster, and look for harmful debris. We'll recover as much debris as practical and safe before exiting.

Depths will reach 30' and maximum dive time may be 60-75 minutes. This swim is longer than most, so if you are not up to 1/3 mile surface approach and longer return underwater, please wait for a more appropriate dive.

In addition to standard scuba kit, divers should have a mesh bag for debris. A dive flag is required per team but we should have at least one to spare, if you don't have one.

TGIF Beach Dive & Lobster Hunt

TGIF Beach Dive & Lobster Hunt

The weekend is almost here and you can go in late on Friday, so pack your kit in your car and join us for a quick dive just off the beach in Hollywood.

Not many divers know about Keating Park but those who do don't need to be told about its charms. Nestled among condos, this little gem offers parking close to the ocean, clean restrooms and showers, and some close in lobster habitat rarely visited by lobster hunters.

Conditions are forecast to be mild, although it might be a bit chilly at first. That's okay because the water is 78F, making it 30 degrees warmer than the air when we begin the dive!

Plan on a maximum depth of 25' and bottom time of approximately 60 minutes. If you are not confident in surf entry, plan on taking one of our beginning beach diver courses available beginning in March. Otherwise, this dive is suitable for experienced open water certified divers.

To ensure your gear order, please submit payment via Venmo (tom-carpenter-8), PayPal (tcarpenterjr@gmail.com), Zelle (954-559-1186), and CashApp ($beachdiver).
